X10 Home Automation with ioBridge Remote Control Apps

A very popular add-on for the ioBridge IO-204 Web Gateway is the X10 Smart Board. This board translates web requests into X10 commands so you are able to remotely control X10 outlets, lights, and thermostats. Mark’s Voice Activated Home Automation System used a combination of Apple’s Siri, X10, and ioBridge APIs.

Recently, the X10 interface modules manufactured by X10 were discontinued. We were able to get the last 25 that were in stock directly from X10. Then, we manufactured another 25 X10 Smart Boards to pair with the X10 interface modules. We are selling the X10 kits on the ioBridge Store and when we run out, we will not be able to manufacture more. We are looking at alternatives and also looking at supporting other home automation protocols such as INSTEON and many others. ioBridge’s ioApp for Android and iPhone supports X10 Controls and will support future protocols. Leave a comment if you have any ideas on what to support next.

HomeWatch iPhone App includes ioBridge Controls

Developers at SunshineApps have included monitor and control support for the ioBridge IO-204 in their updated app, HomeWatch. This app is designed to interface with many types of home automation gear, power monitors, and webcams.  HomeWatch supports ioBridge IO-204 widgets for sensor monitoring and X10 controls; Y-Cam, Axis 207 and Foscam Camera viewing; and TED 5000 power monitoring.

HomeWatch is available in the Apple App Store for the iPhone and iPad devices.

Platform Updates and New Humidity Sensor

The ioBridge team has been working a new set of updates for the ioBridge web gateway modules and the platform. We have added new features to both the IO-204 and the IO-204-PRO modules. We received a lot of requests for a native humidity sensor and it’s ready to go.

You can upgrade your modules over-the-web, by signing into the ioBridge.com Interface and selecting your module, then by clicking Details and Upgrade.

Here’s an overview of the new features:

  • New Firmware – The new firmware adds support for a new variable space for 32-bit values and onboard set points. Other enhancements include wider support for network configurations such as ATM and Mobile Data Networks. We also added watch-dog timers in the event of module lockups.
  • Variable Value Widget – Now you can control the variable value on your module. This means you can send values from a web service down to your module and use that value in your on-board rules. For eaxample, you could make a thermostat based on WeatherBug’s reported temperature.
  • Widget Customizations – You can now change the hover label for chart widgets and the scaling on the analog gauge widgets. The Widget ID / Key is now prominently displayed on the widget editor. Chart widget times now display the users local time.
  • Set Points – You can now compare input values to Variable Value 2 and create set points that can be changed.
  • Additions to the Module Interface – You can now directly set the variable values from the interface. We have also added listeners for both sides of serial smart board traffic.
  • HTTP POST Actions – This new feature allows you can send a custom HTTP POST as a server-side action. The new feature supports Basic Auth and the ability to customize a POST to any external service.
  • Custom X10 Widget – Originally we supported X10 outlets through our web service. With this update, you can send custom X10 commands to support other X10 devices like thermostats.
  • Data Feed API v2 – Updated the Data Feed API for the IO-204 and IO-204-PRO includes SSL support and a RESTful interface.

Maker Faire Wrap Up

Over 2000 people came to the first annual Maker Faire North Carolina in Durham, NC. There were makers from all over. It was a blast!

We had on display web-enabled robots, toys, and interactive projects created by the ioBridge community. Some of those projects included, an iPhone and Twitter controlled Donkey Kong, X10 controlled lamp, streaming temperature sensor, and a remote controlled dog treat dispenser.

While we were there, we captured some footage of our projects on display and exhibits that we were able to see. There were so many great projects and so little time. We made a quick YouTube video and posted pictures to the ioBridge Flickr group.

Thanks to all of the volunteers, exhibitors, and sponsors who made the Maker Faire NC such a success.

Automate Your Home [ReadWriteWeb]

Richard MacManus of ReadWriteWeb wrote an article about ioBridge and Matt Morey’s home automation project via Twitter. Matt created a system that allows him to not only get messages from his office, but to control lights and devices using Twitter. He now has a real-time, two-control system for automating some processes at his office using the ioBridge IO-204 monitor and control module.
